Chandigarh, June 23 – Haryana Chief Minister, Sh. Nayab Singh Saini said that, on the lines of electricity-related grievances, prompt resolution of drinking water-related issues must also be ensured. Providing clean and adequate drinking water to every citizen is the key responsibility of the government, and there will be no shortage of funds for this purpose, he said.
The Chief Minister was presiding over the 59th meeting of the Haryana Water Supply and Sewerage Board. Public Health Engineering Minister, Sh. Ranbir Gangwa was also present in the meeting.
The Chief Minister directed that there should be no pending complaints related to drinking water supply. He said that strict action would be taken against officers concerned if complaints are received regarding drinking water issues. He also directed that a toll-free number be issued for addressing drinking water-related grievances.
He further directed that all old and damaged drinking water pipelines laid across the state should be replaced to prevent contamination from mixing with dirty water. Officers informed that around 1,245 kilometres of water supply pipelines would be replaced.
The Chief Minister also directed that water should be supplied to water works through pipelines instead of open channels and that a survey be conducted and proposals prepared accordingly. Similarly, issues related to overflowing sewerage systems, broken manhole covers and open sewerage points should be resolved immediately, he directed.
*Prepare a Proposal to Prevent Discharge of Polluted Water into the Ghaggar*
The Chief Minister said that, like the Yamuna River, no untreated or polluted water should be discharged into the Ghaggar River. He directed officers to prepare a separate proposal in this regard. He also directed that solar power plants be installed at water works.
He further directed that sewerage levels in villages covered under the Mahagram Yojana should be properly assessed and that sewerage water should be disposed of scientifically. A survey should also be conducted to ensure drinking water facilities for people living in remote Dhanis. Adequate drinking water arrangements should also be made in colonies developed under the government’s scheme of providing 100-square-yard plots to economically weaker families. He directed that sewerage systems in all cities be thoroughly cleaned before the onset of the monsoon season.
The Chief Minister also directed the constitution of a Task Force Committee for inspection of drinking water supply systems, STPs and sewerage infrastructure. The committee will include officers of Urban Local Bodies, Development and Panchayat Department and HSVP. It will assess water quality, monitor Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels of STPs and submit reports along with recommendations.
*Special Strategy to Improve Water Situation in Panchkula, Rohtak, Charkhi Dadri and Hansi*
The Chief Minister directed that a special strategy be prepared to improve the water supply situation in Panchkula, Rohtak, Charkhi Dadri and Hansi. He also directed the construction of a water works facility for the Pinjore, Morni and Kalka region.
He said that maximum rainwater should be stored in Kaushalya Dam during the monsoon season and special measures should be taken to enhance its storage capacity.
During the meeting, several projects aimed at strengthening drinking water supply, sewerage and sanitation infrastructure in the state for the year 2026-27 were approved. During the previous year, 1,330 development works were completed, including 1,000 in rural areas and 330 in urban areas. During this period, 82 canal-based water works, 254 tubewells, 91 boosting stations and more than 4,300 kilometres of water supply pipelines were commissioned. Additionally, 150 kilometres of sewerage lines were laid in various cities.
Commissioner and Secretary, Sh.Pankaj Yadav informed that a comprehensive roadmap has been prepared for the current financial year to improve drinking water supply and sewerage facilities across the state. Under this action plan, 712 new augmentation and improvement schemes for rural and urban drinking water supply have been approved at a cost of Rs. 2,534.39 crore.
He said that the department remains committed to providing quality drinking water, improved sanitation facilities and modern water management services to the people of Haryana.
